Atheist bus hits the London streets

The atheist bus is here… and the atheist tube and the atheist TV screens. The campaign responding to a series of religious bus ads has now received a staggering £140,000 in donations from the public and the results are on show now. Nicely timed for Epiphany. Read more here

We’ve had the pulp mill bus and that was given the green light amid controversy.

Anything goes??

Personally I believe we are descended from aliens and lizard men although Allah has me interested with that 72 virgins bit……but if I die an old man, what the hell would I do with 72 virgins????
And why 72? Is that some sort of record?

Maybe everlasting life sounds better……maybe they could combine Muslims and Christians…say Chrislims or Mustians and have the best of both worlds???

Personally I’ll just keep licking my eyes and experimenting with my probe………..

I see the Anglican Bishop John Harrower has recently had something to say about the bus campaign.

In the December 2008 issue of “Tasmanian Anglican” magazine he asks “why are these atheists so upset by ‘God’?”. He offers no insight into an answer but I might suggest some things for him to ponder.

A quick glance at the Anglican church website reveals “divinely inspired” insights on such issues as: stem cells, climate change, economics, homosexuality and much more. Why does that matter? Well the Bishop and his brethren don’t bother me too much if they want to believe in God but when they start using their beliefs to justify and influence public policy then I do get upset about ‘God’.

The Bishop is probably not aware that London atheist bus ads were a response to ads telling people they would burn in Hell if they didn’t believe in Jesus. Not surprisingly, that upsets me about ‘God’ too.

When the church targets young people for indoctrination when they have no capacity for critical thinking and trust their elders, I get upset about ‘God’ too.

The Bishop suggests his own bus slogan: “God is with us. Enjoy life. Hop aboard the Jesus bus.”

Really? “Enjoy life”. Well, I try, but it is pretty difficult when people tell me I will burn in Hell unless I follow their beliefs (and it is not just in London - I was handed a brochure on the street in Hobart a couple of days before Christmas telling me the same thing).

I would love to see the Bishop’s slogan on a bus! Contact Metro and ask them to run the ad.

The Bishop is apparently filled with passion because God loves him. Great, but I would love to see you answer your own question.
