FLATHEAD fishmongers and cafe in Cascade Road, South Hobart (another eastern shore export to the western shore) is nothing short of fantastic.

Joff Jennings, the chef at Bellerive Yacht Club, is doing a great job in South Hobart. The food is fresh and interesting.

There is a wine list, or you can bring your own
bottle.  Good staff, too. The Tasmanian scallops we tried were superb. The oysters - what can I say - fantastic. Flathead’s can only seat 24 people, and the takeaway trade was very brisk.

Flathead adds to the interesting foodie places in South Hobart, including the Macquarie Food Store and the totally gorgeous Le Provencal. Then you add in the interesting food stores that are there, and South Hobart is really going ahead.

It was pouring with rain, so I decided to drop into a waterfront pub to get something to eat. I ordered the pub’s taste platter ($14.50). I expected something more than what appeared before me! Two slices of bun (toasted), an oyster, a curried scallop, three squid rings served on cold soba noodles (which were served on two pieces of cucumber), “mixed leaves” and a totally awful “spiced carrot” dip.  This sort of muck destroys the image of Tasmanian food as good tucker.

It was truly awful.
