Parliament has just been reconvened after a nine week break. It sits for one week, then they have another three weeks’ break. That means twelve weeks off and one on in the last quarter of a year.
Great job some people have!
But even more significant is that all those inconvenient little problems that troubled the government before the last recess have been set aside in favour of new issues. So the problem of corruption of witnesses is no longer on the cards, and Paul Lennon has survived that, and the giveaway of millions of dollars worth of State assets has also conveniently been consigned to the ‘history’ bin.
The new issue is the hospitals and health service, where David Llewellyn is under fire. I think his death knell has already been sounded in that the Premier says that he has faith in his Minister. The exact words he used about Ken Bacon during the Spirit III debacle.
One thing these long holidays has done is to allow a new concept into Tasmanian politics - rule by decree. Whilst Parliament is not sitting and debating all the other hot potatoes, such as pulp mills and land development, Paul Lennon has the floor to himself.
‘I can safely say, without fear of contradiction!’
