The Hobart City Council has decided to investigate becoming a Fair Trade Council.
Alderman Philip Cocker presented a motion to the Council’s finance committee asking for the Council to examine committing to promoting awareness of Fair Trade through undertaking Fair Trade procurement wherever possible.
The motion also asked the council to report on the steps required for the council to become FairTrade accredited. The motion was unanimously supported.
“I am very excited that we are going down this path as it is a way that Council with its procurement can make a difference”, Alderman Cocker said.
“This is entirely consistent with the Council’s vision and policies and a positive way to be a community Leader.
“My long term ambition is that Hobart will be recognized as a Fair Trade Capital City and Fair Trade products will become the first choice for many” Alderman Cocker said.
“That: 1. A report be written to examine the Council committing to promoting awareness of FairTrade to its constituency through undertaking FairTrade procurement wherever possible, and to work together with local business, organisations and consumers to promote the availability and use of fair trade products within the community.
2. The report examine the necessary steps to become FairTrade accredited.
