THE MERCURY:
TASMANIA’S controversial Essential Learnings curriculum is the worst primary school education system in Australia, according to a new national report. Benchmarking Australian Primary School Curricula blasts aspects of Essential Learnings (ELs) as being “vague and lacking academic rigour”.
ELs was rated bottom of the class in all three subject areas the Federal Government report assessed. Education Minister Paula Wriedt accused federal Education Minister Brendan Nelson of employing a friend to write the report. Report author Kevin Donnelly said four highly respected, highly qualified academics contributed to the report.
