The cost of a basket of 35 items, which included bread, rice and bananas varied in cost from $123.15 in Geelong, Victoria, to more than $136 in Bunbury and Hobart, Tasmania. CHOICE spokesman Christopher Zinn said the reasons for higher prices included less competition and higher transport costs. In the eastern states, German discount supermarket chain Aldi prompted competition and helped lower prices.
