While significant international trade is within MNCs, the level of extreme vertical integration is less than it has been in previous era - when Ford might have owned rubber plantations in Brazil to make tyres for its cars.

The direct investment associated with multinationals is usually seen as better than indirect portfolio investment .. activities are more ‘real’ and investment is more likely to be permanent, rather than speculating on real estate.

In most countries the MNC has more to fear from its host than vice-versa - forced nationalisations in Russia and Venezuela, higher taxation etc. It is true that wages have not risen in many countries around the world. But in some regions they have risen substantially -  China, parts of India, Eastern Europe - based on globalisation. Do we want these people to stay poor?
