Whilst Lara could well lay claim to such a preselection proposition, having been a former state member for Lyons and having represented the people in southern Brighton up till last year when the boundaries changed.

However until the last three seats are sorted from Saturday night all sorts of theories and claims can be made (and get oxygen).

So let us make up some better ones.

Sturgo has been given the tap on the shoulder from Kevin Rudd and is likely to be appointed the next Governor General. Daniel Hulme has been short listed for a board position on the Tote given how he wagered big against ridiculous odds.

I am sure the TT audience can do much better than that.

If I was the Liberal Party President I would be sounding out JANE HOWLETT to run for the Liberals in Federal Lyons.If Jane was interested and her family commitments allowed it she would be very very hard to beat with all that momentum from her tireless campaigning in this State Poll.I would act now and decisively although decisiveness has been lacking in the Tasmanian Liberal Party for some years with a few exceptions.If Lara Giddings does contest Lyons I don’t think she would relish tackling Jane Howlett.

the 5 tasmanian house of representative seats in tasmania are the most valuable thing going in tasmania.

in this big game comng up shortly the greens would be short-changeing themselves if the price for green directed preferences (est. 15% - 20% of votes) in all 5 tasmanian (plus possibly some mainland seats) were any less than stopping the gunns pulp mill plus save lake peddar.

(the greens may have to tick off on a hydro scheme on the gordon-below-franklin ,which would use part of the peddar catchment water,as part-payment for saving lake peddar).

Many blue collar & other jobs would be the outcome.

This is not true. Of that i am certain. For one thing Dick is not retiring. For another there have been no nominations. No vote. Complete ludicrous fiction.

Lara would provide a seamless transition from Dick Adams.  Despite the size difference, they carry about the same metaphorical weight.

Dick Adams is 58, and is a long way from retiring. Bob Brown is a lot closer to retiring than Dick is, and it looks like his staffer, Adam Burling, did so poorly in the state poll that he is unlikely to get the nod to fill Bob’s seat by that dubious mechanism, the casual senate vacancy. It is more of a question to sort that one than to speculate about dick Adams’ seat!
I have known Dick for about 32 years, and Lara for about 14 years, and I can tell you neither scenario rings true.
Lara has enjoyed her time as Deputy Premier and Attorney General, and she has made a good contribution in the difficult portfolio of Health Minister, and it is far better to be number two in the party in Tasmania than to be a backbencher in Canberra in a much larger house, with all the travelling that goes with it, and an electorate the size of Lyons to service.
If Dick did want to not recontest, (and I don’t believe that is the case), there are plenty of good potential candidates that could have a good show of holding that seat, without taking Lara out of the Tasmanian House of Assembly.

Good Luck to Mr Hutchinson who I am sure he is a very capable candidate.However it wouldn’t matter who the Liberals put up against Dick Adams if he stays which as a constituent of Lyons I hope he does because Dick is UNBEATABLE.Dick is probably the best and most genuine grass roots politician in Australia and does tireless excellent work for ALL the people of Lyons.

I doubt it.  The fact is the Greens can “direct” preferences against a sitting Labor House of Reps member (or a new Labor candidate) all they like but most Greens voters will ignore the HTV and continue preferencing the Labor Party because that is what Greens voters do.  They are, in general, deeply averse to voting for or preferencing the Liberals.  They could be even more so next election with Tony Abbott as the Coalition leader.

Karen Cassidy’s votes in 2007 went 71:29 to Dick Adams over the Libs, and Adams is seen as one of the most gung-ho forestry supporters in the Labor Party state or federal.  The Greens could do what they liked with their HTV cards and that wouldn’t drop below 55:45 with any conceivable choice of Labor candidate.  They can direct against Adams next time and he will still get more of their preferences than the Libs.

Many people told me before the last election that Greens voters would not preference Dick Adams.  I told them they would be wrong about that and they were.  I am saying it again: the idea that Greens voters would suddenly switch to mostly preferencing Libs just because a HTV card recommended they should belongs to the realm of political fantasy.  Preferencing decisions at federal level simply do not have as much impact on actual Greens preferences as people imagine they do.

My commenting on this thread doesn’t mean I credit the latest Hag rumour one iota.

Sounds like a good reason for Karen to instead preference the Ethics & Sustainability Party as if it’s not economically aligned too far to right from Labor, maybe Greens supporters will feel comfortable voting for it, i.e environmental, rather than just for safe public service jobs with Dick & Rudd at the helm.
