Image for Live Exports Review: Greens call for mandatory pre-slaughter stunning

Commenting on the federal government’s response to the Farmer Review into the live-export industry, Greens NSW Senator and Animal Welfare spokesperson Lee Rhiannon has criticised the federal government’s failure to end the live export trade and make pre-slaughter stunning mandatory.

“The live export trade is inherently cruel and should be stopped,” Senator Rhiannon said.

“Auditing individual cattle sent overseas is not the answer to this cruel trade.

“Pre-slaughter stunning should be mandatory at all abattoirs where Australian livestock is slaughtered.

“The government’s failure to require all exported animals to be stunned before their throats are cut is a set back.

“Livestock killed at abattoirs that do not use stunning suffer a cruel death.

“The government has failed to satisfactorily address the cruel practices revealed by Animals Australia in their investigation of overseas abattoirs that slaughter Australian livestock,” Senator Rhiannon said.
