TASCORP has borrowings of more than $5 billion but few Tasmanians even know what it is. Like a bank, it can borrow, lend and invest. It can deal in securities, real estate and personal property. And all its wheeling and dealing is guaranteed by the State Government and, consequently, the taxpayers of Tasmania. Tascorp, the Tasmanian Public Finance Corporation, has unbelievably deep pockets. But its profile is akin to that of wealthy Texan recluse, the late Howard Hughes.
