The body overseeing Tasmania’s three water corporations will be disbanded.
The functions of Onstream will revert to the three regional water corporations, Southern Water, Ben Lomond Water and Cradle Mountain.
Up to 16 staff will lose their jobs.
Onstream provides billing, IT and payroll services for the corporations/
Chairman Miles Hampton says the move will save $2 million a year.
“We’re simply taking some costs out of the operations of Onstream, those costs are in fact paid for by the regional corporations.”
“The core activities of Onstream will continue.
“The fact that people might be in a different building doesn’t change what they’ll be doing,” Mr Hampton said.
The business is yet to detail what sector the job losses will come from.
The Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s Mark Bowles says the savings need to flow back to consumers rather than be directed to councils as increased dividends.
“The restructure of the four water and sewerage corporations down into three should provide for a more streamlined and cost effective service and that should flow back to the consumers in the form of lower water and sewerage costs, not to high dividends.”
