CHRISTINE Jackman, senior writer with The Weekend Australian Magazine, last night won the print category of this year’s Voiceless Media Prize.
Jackman received the award for her feature article “The claws come out”, which examined a group of lawyers who provide free legal advice for the prosecution of animal cruelty cases.
The Voiceless Media Prizes, now in their third year, aim to recognise the most accurate and influential reports on animal protection and ethics.
The chairman of the judging panel, Nobel literature laureate J. M. Coetzee said: “There are numbers of able and committed journalists in Australia who take it as their task to bring instances of cruel or illegal treatment of animals to public notice, and generally to keep animal issues before the public eye.”
ABC Four Corners journalist Sarah Ferguson and producer Michael Doyle won the broadcast category for their investigation of Australia’s live cattle trade with Indonesia. Their program led to mass public outcry and the temporary suspension of the live cattle trade with Indonesia.
