Power bill price hike 4

Tasmania’s energy retailer wants to increase the average power bill by about $50 from next year.

Aurora Energy is seeking approval from the Australian Energy Regulator for the price hike.

The proposed increase only applies to the distribution portion of the power bill, known as the residential “poles and wires network”.

That accounts for almost a third of the total bill.

On July next year, customers would pay an extra 7.5 per cent for distribution costs to help Aurora recoup money upgrading the network.

An average annual househould power bill will be $2,500, an increase of about $50.

But Aurora expects increases in the following four years will not be as severe.

The company will not rule out hikes to other components of the power bill like power generation and retail services.
