The Premier and John Gay are no longer people who count in this debate.

In fact, only one person now counts - he’s a Member of the Legislative Council, a person who will take a lot of other Members with him when he votes, a former Mayor of working class suburbia and a man who many believe represents the “true” Labor spirit that is sadly lacking in most of his Parliamentary colleagues.

More than anyone else today, MLC Terry Martin holds the future of the pulp mill proposal, and the state, in his hands.

Hopefully Terry Martin, among all others, can see that the pulp mill is being rammed through Parliament because it can’t meet the environmental requirements of the RPDC process.

Placing the proposed mill in a valley known to suffer from a terrible combination of inversion layers and particulate pollution is madness, pure and simple.

Any other proposed development that could be proven to lead to the deaths of nearby residents would be banned immediately - here’s hoping Mr Martin doesn’t lose sight of this unavoidable fact ... or the power that he now wields.

In less than one hour $15,000 dollars was given to The Wilderness Society for a fund to ensure that all legal challenges under Commonwealth legislation are explored and where necessary exercised.

TWS is looking to set up a $100,000 fund to support efforts to challenge this appalling watering-down of an assesmment process for Gunn’s Pulp Mill in the Tamar valley.

It is now time for ordinary people to show Gunns that this company’s long history of corporate bullying and attempts to undermine due process is totally unacceptable.
