After leaving parliament the former Democrat Senator Norm Sanders made wood burning stoves for a living (remember when they were considered good for the environment, I can) in the blurb that accompanied the stove was a suggestion that the Mercury was an excellent way of igniting the wood.
Ex Senator Norm went onto suggest to the stoves buyers that the Mercury was an even better source of heat if it were rolled up tightly and burned unread. So what has suddenly changed? Did I miss the edition/s when the ‘Mockery’ (a term of endearment I promise) became an independent voice, a source of real news, high quality editorial comment or investigative journalism?
Or was it just another of the worlds many Murdoch money making rags. A trivialized parochial propaganda sheet.
For many The Mercury was just somewhere where the over 70’s to check the funeral notices to see if they were still alive each day and on Saturdays it helped Hobartians plan the best route around the garage sales.

From what, exactly? Rupert? Leaving the run a little late, wouldn’t you say, Linz?

I am against jobs in the Mercury being lost, but find it hard to get passionate about the cause - it has to be worth fighting for. And the Muckery just isn’t.

#3, I agree salamander, the Muckery has shat in its nest too much to expect our sympathy now. Good riddance. They belong in Melbourne. We need a truly independent media player to keep southern Tasmanians informed. Maybe with Garry Bailey out, there will be some decent, fair-minded reporting for once and not this stuff that hides behind the obvious handicap most members of the public struggle with, of not being able to afford to take the Mercury through the civil courts for defamation. They are a filthy outfit and we’ll do well to be rid of them.
