IN 1842 about 5000 people, mostly women and children, gathered in Melbourne to watch two men hang. The festive crowd jeered and laughed while watching the slow and agonising death of two Tasmanian Aborigines, Pevay and Timmy. It was the first ever public execution in what was then known as Port Phillip.
