They really are strange people in Launceston, they’ve allowed their newspaper to treat them like mushrooms forever and a day.

And strange thing is, they seem to relish the bullshit and darkness.

Irish Cream’s southern rag stand out as a Harold Evans like Beacon by comparison.

Congratulations to the little rag we fondly call “The Exaggerator”.

The paper seems typical of many community papers in that it now views its readers as consumers foremost rather than citizens. It is wall to wall ads and is full of special suppliments that are just paid advertisements. Also press releases are commonly used to fill column space.

Its pro-business and pro-development editorials runs against the community view of this city and its future.

It leans so far to the right it is horizontal.

For a laugh compare the 2004 and 2005 front pages for the day after the Melbourne Cup. Is Launceston stuck in a time loop?

MMMM. When the RPDC released news that the IIS for the pulp mill proposal was available, the so called “Exaggerator” featured an extremely relevant story regarding a cat.

It seems the “Barra” is a fitting tribute.

If Media Watch don’t take this award back and apologise immediately to Mr. Southwell and Examiner, Tasmanians will end up on the scrap-heap. This is a clear conspiracy and the Examiner is being victimised because it supports jobs for Tasmanians.
Bob Brown doesn’t. But the Examiner does and so does Gunns.

It’s time to decide people. You are either with Tasmania (and my newspaper) or you’re with the Greens!

I’ve been looking round for a little block somewhere nice in Northern Tas within commuting distance to Lonnie.

I drive around and try to find somewhere where there are no “green desert” plantations or people that want to sell their land for same.

That is so far impossible, but I live in hope.

I want somewhere that the aerial spraying of deadly poison does not drift near, somewhere where the creeks are not contaminated by 1080 carcasses or simazine, atrazine or someotherzine or somewhere far away from where blue carrots fall from the sky at night and napalm falls by day.

I look for somewhere that both humans and native wildlife have a chance to survive and live in peace, not be displaced and tortured by human terrorists fully sanctioned by our leaders.

If anyone knows of this elusive place, free from rape and pillage, please let me know.

Tell it like it is, Rick.  Don’t hold back.  I reckon the Examiner does a pretty good job of supporting jobs for Tasmanians…unless of course they are young cadet journos trying to get a foot in the door and showing a bit of professional initiative.

This is only partly about the Pulp Mill bizzo, although that’s pretty important.  You can take the award of the Barra seriously or not—you cannot deny what has been exposing in awarding it.  We will have to look elsewhere for fair and balanced journalism regarding the issues that will affect our community for decades to come—that’s the bottom line.  It’s pathetic.

“A lot of it was reasonably factual…” That’s because it was plagiarised.  I defy anyone to call it anything else.

I hope that Barra gets mounted right on the front of the building, in Paterson Street.

Any word on how the young cadet went in his hearing against The Ex? Wes?
