The other day I re-read the foreword to the 1972 treatise Limits to Growth in which the then UN boss, U Thant, said: “Members of the United Nations have perhaps 10 years left” to create a global partnership or the problems we face will reach “such staggering problems that they will be beyond our capacity to control”. I read that passage with wide open eyes as a young man and now, 37 years later, I know that U Thant was dead right.
