
The Trial of Michelle O’Byrne was born in smoke. The years 2008 and 2009 saw widespread occurrences of smoke from planned burns infiltrating communities in various places on the island. For some people, this has led to a sense of abandonment, as they struggled to survive the burns, only to be told to stay in the house or to check the internet for details – as if wind patterns follow bureau predictions! As if we are able to put our lives on hold, our commitments on hold, while the burns happen. As if you can keep smoke out of a house by keeping windows and doors shut! Representations were handballed, meetings denied, letters acknowledged, and seemingly nothing done.
