Ah, Felix, my estranged twin. We feel the same about native logging in Tasmania - we’re both passionately against it. But the IGA remains the ‘jewel in the crown’ - of Greens wins following the election (so far) - because it remains the best and only realistic plan to finally end what this photo shows - and, indeed, to end industrial -scale native logging in Tassie for ever.

Perhaps you’ve got a better idea of how to stop it? Whinging and tut-tutting doesn’t really suffice.

Dear Felix, you were always the pessimistic brother and your take on this pic proves it. You think the IGA’s negative means the entire agreement is moribund - even though it could preserve 600,000ha of pristine native forest in perpetuity. Is that really something you want to undermine?

This is precisely why Kim Booth, the Greens Forest spokesperson, has so passionately defended the party’s position in buying out the remaining native logging contracts so they can be retired into conservation. (Perhaps I should also point out that the Greens aren’t a signatory to the IGA and have reserved the right to support the best elements and improve the worst…)

But Tom, what are the Greens doing about pulpwood plantations?  It’s all very well to save (possibly - still no evidence of success) some fraction of the 600,000ha of tourist-friendly, vote-catching HCV forest, but not at the price of poisoning the catchments and turning our natural resources into paper pulp (either here or elsewhere) instead of long-lasting timber products and food.

I note your careful choice of words.  The IGA “could preserve 600,000ha of pristine native forest in perpetuity.”  Could?!  I “could” win the Melbourne Cup if I was fast enough - and a horse.

Tin Tin 4. Part of why I do what I do is because I helped these #^%@&% get elected 18 months ago. I put up posters, letterboxed and was on the ticket myself. For that I was back-stabbed as the Greens went into coalition with a party they knew were hopelessly compromised morally and ethically. What was clear to me was not clear to the Hobart-centic party management group. How was I to know they were just a sub-branch of Labor? After all they never told anybody. By forming a coalition with Labor and not FORCING Liberal to go into coalition with Labor or go back to the polls, the Greens have destroyed any chance they had of becoming a majority government for decades. Sorry Tom de Kadt but thats the political reality. What I won’t be doing is lifting a finger to help the Greens or any other party until such time as they can demonstrate they have a coherent philosophy and not just a sample bag of populist tinsel.

It is wonderful to find humour on T.T. Serious subjects can be dealt with so well using humour.

Tin Tin 8. You really need to address your questions to the right people. Trying to transfer the Lab-Green coalition stuff-up onto somebody who is already a victim of their garbage is going to get you nowhere.

Karl, I’m not trying to transfer anything to anyone, I am just hoping as I sit down to fill out my ballot paper that you have more to contribute to the/any debate that just a constant stream of negatives.

Whether you’ve been crapped on from a great height or not, surely you have some sort of solution to broader issues such as these.

Maybe you don’t, I don’t know, that is why the question was put.

Just a way to address the issues we and future generations will need to resolve.

Update on timber loading. Ship’s name: African Joy. Registered Port: Hong Kong. State of loading Sunday 11.30 am: Truck after truck gets unloaded and loads transferred to the deck of the African Joy. Stern of ship already under waterline. Holds must be full. Two land-based machines re-arranging logs on deck. Expect loading will be finished in a flash at this rate and the whole scene back to dreamy Hobart by start of business on Monday morning.
