MALCOLM, of Hobart
TT readers may not have seen the above Public Notice from Saturday’s Mercury advising that Gunns Limited have closed Wielangta Road (a public road within State Forest) with immediate effect until further notice. The ramifications arising from this notice raise several pertinent questions for the State Government including:
How can a private company close public access to the Wielangta State Forest which also acts as a thoroughfare to places such as Rheban from Hobart?
Has the 2 tonne limit imposed on Robertson Bridge been breached by vehicles involved in forestry operations resulting in structural damage to the bridge?
Who will be paying for the necessary repairs to the bridge?
When will public access to Wielangta Road be restored?
Has the State Government/Forestry Tasmania sub-contracted management of public roads within Wielangta State Forest to Gunns Limited?
If so, under what mechanism is this enabled and where else in the State has this same arrangement occurred?
Why are all queries in relation to the Public Notice to be directed to the Forest Manager, Gunns Triabunna who has neglected to provide any contact details on the notice?
