Oil and gas company Woodside says the Federal Government has handled the oil spill in the Timor Sea “perfectly”. Woodside chief executive Don Voelte says the oil spill beneath the West Atlas rig and subsequent fire is a regrettable incident which has damaged the oil and gas industry’s reputation. Oil has been leaking from beneath the West Atlas rig for 10 weeks. Rig operator PTTEP Australasia successfully intercepted the leak yesterday before a large fire broke out. Meanwhile Federal Resources Minister Martin Ferguson has rejected claims by conservation groups that the Government’s trying to conceal from the public the number and scale of oil and gas leaks. Last week it was revealed there was a second leak off Western Australia’s north coast, which began at the same time as the more major West Atlas oil leak.
