The world seems like it’s trajectory is simply perfect if you listen to the myriad of money men spruiking benefits left right and centre.
But what of Australia, the real Australia, the one far removed from the corporate glitz and flashy suits?
I’m a lucky one. Raised in a “middle class” working family I had access to education and enjoyed a relatively free reign with the ability to “free think” and make informed choices.
I thought Australia was indeed the lucky country.
I thought that we were quite wealthy and rich in resources that would, should and could benefit all of us and still be plenty left over to help those on the planet whose circumstances left a lot to be desired.
As I became older and saw more of where we were headed and the motivations that drive our country to where it is today, disappointment and disillusionment grew exponentially.
Lust for wealth and disregard for all that sustains life is now such a driver in Australia that I see no end.
Sydney in the early 1970’s was where my childhood was spent and it was pretty bloody good.
Mum and dad both worked and we were minded and disciplined by my grandmother who was too handy with the cane.
She was old school and pretty hard core; but some grub still rolled her in the dunnys at Strathfield station when she was 80 or so, but I digress.
People had respect for each other and things around them.
If you lost your wallet in the main drag, sure as eggs it would be returned intact.
People had time and were friendly and courteous.
I think of that as a woman spat some chewing gum on the ground in front of me and gave me the “ice daggers” look as I walked through Lonnie yesterday and it made me wonder where it all went wrong.
Tassie has changed significantly over the seven years I have called this beautiful rock my home.
We now enjoy multitudes of “gourmet” everything and you know you’ve made it when you are sitting high in an X5 Beemer.
House prices are out of this world and the friendly smiles and steady pace have gone….well in the main centres at least.
I was lucky enough to have my children here long enough to see something of the way of life I enjoyed as a child before lust and greed evaporated our meaning of self.
Random crime is way up, drink driving is all the rage, and road rage is all the rage.
Why all the rage? We have all we need and more. In fact we have never seen life so good, but still we live in a society where opiates such as football and pokies are the panacea, while lengthy hospital queues are considered a fair thing.
Our leaders, self revered, still enjoy the fruits of being corporate lapdogs and justify their exploits to no one and thrive in a world of impunity.
I read on the news today that a foreign company has just bought swathes of productive Victorian farmland. So much for the “buy Australian” mantra…or was that just another patriotic charade?
Forest remover Gunns, have seen their shares rise on the back of speculation that their sniffing round failed MIS company Timbercorp will reap rewards, perhaps it will dovetail with Bartlett’s letter of consent and Aird’s taxpayer funded “mystery tour” to plug the beleaguered pulp mill shemozzle?
Either way it seems that investors are just that.
They share no allegiance to country any more than politicians share allegiance to those they are elected to represent.
So whether its a piece of chewy that will no doubt cause someone to curse as its is eventually tracked across carpet or whether it is denuded mountains and the relentless eradication of our native species with deadly poison, or be it tireless charades from pollies who tread water till their bloated pensions crack open, rest assured that we are on the path of descent.
Where it will end only the conclusion of this amazing show will tell.
“While one person stands tall over another, no one will win”
