Greens Leader Nick McKim MP brought on for debate his Private Members’ Dying with Dignity Bill 2009 today, which sought to confirm the right of those suffering from a terminal illness and experiencing intolerable pain to request assistance from a medically qualified person to end voluntarily their lives in a humane and dignified manner.
“The law protects us while we are alive, and it should also protect us while we are dying, and that is what the Dying with Dignity Bill is trying to achieve,” Mr McKim said.
“I thank my Parliamentary colleagues for their respectful and considered contributions during the debate and while it is disappointing that today we did not succeed, I am not deterred and I pledge to continue to campaign for people’s right to choose to end their lives with dignity.”
“I also thank both Leaders of the Labor and Liberal parties for providing a conscience vote for their members on this important matter, and also for providing sufficient Parliamentary time to enable today’s debate to occur.”
Mr McKim’s Dying with Dignity Bill 2009 was defeated 15 vs 7 (with two absent).
