Indulges in Attacks on the Media Instead

The Tasmanian Greens today called on the Police Minister, Jim Cox, to reverse his decision to cut staff at the Police Call Centre, saying that this service should be considered frontline.

Greens Police and Emergency Services spokesperson Tim Morris MP said that Minister Cox had failed to answer his specific question about maintenance of frontline services and instead indulged in a rant against the media.

“The Police Call Service is a key component of the Safe at Home legislation which seeks to reduce domestic violence, and the Greens believe that it should be considered part of the frontline services that are quarantined from economic cuts,” Mr Morris said.

“Minister Cox failed to address the Greens’ call for the call centre night shift to be maintained, on the basis that these workers are utilised to assist with other routine work should there be quiet periods, to ensure that victims of domestic violence do get through to a person at the end of the line instead of an answering machine.”

“It would have been more useful to the community, and to the Police, for Minister Cox to have addressed my specific question about treating the Police Call Centre as a frontline service, rather than indulging in attacking the media.”
