TASMANIAN men are being urged to take a stand and make a pledge against family violence on today’s White Ribbon Day – the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

A White Ribbon Day Ambassador, Tasmanian Liberal Senator Stephen Parry is backing this year’s campaign, which encourages men to take an oath.

``The oath speaks for itself and should be supported by all Tasmanian men,’’ Senator Parry said.

I swear:

never to commit violence against women,

never to excuse violence against women, and

never to remain silent about violence against women.

This is my oath.

``Thousands of Australians from all walks of life have taken the pledge already, and I urge Tasmanian men to lead the country by hopping online and swearing today.

``Simply visit http://www.myoath.com.au and click `Swear Now’.’’

Tasmania’s White Ribbon Day ambassadors, who include senior police officers and union officials, will host a fundraiser at Parliament House in Hobart on Friday evening.

``We are fortunate to have as our guests Hawthorn footballers Chance Bateman and Max Bailey, who represent the AFL’s commitment to `creating a safe and inclusive environment for all women at all levels of Australian football’.

``Anyone interested in attending the function should contact my office on 1300 760 788.’’
