  2. The dams making up the Hydro supply of stored energy sit at a constant of 65% empty.

Rain and snow melt may address this in several years of above average precipitation securing a reserve to buffer supply.

However, as demand continues to grow what is the plan to address that given that coal will not remain carbon tax free for ever.

Is it the return of MRET’s under a different national regime [range of causes - current government changes its stance to a green balance of power]or to drift along with dirty power until its price changes with a carbon tax.

Will the existing gas fired station have a price advantage with a carbon tax making its closure precipitate.

It is no wonder that the return on the investment in the Hydroo system is so low with investments such as Bell Bay being closed such a short time after conversion to gas.

Thank you Mr Barren, I hope you are able to continue this critique

  3. Thank you, Bacchus, for some insights into the murky world of ‘power politics’.

It all seems so depressingly familiar. Large businesses exploiting Government incompetence (and worse) to their advantage while we pay the bills.

  4. Thanks for that insight Bachus, it,s a bloody , awfull depressing state of affairs , and the Tassie people voted for them, all the more reason for non compulsory voting ,at least then, the govt,s we get are the ones who are voted there by those who give a damn,!

  5. It’s fundamental to any discussion of electricity generation, to define your terms.

A gas fired, combined cycle power station is very different to what we have at Bell Bay.

The three gas turbines to be installed by Hydro T at Bell Bay are not combined cycle as far as I know.

Would somebody please succinctly and accurately describe the technology?

  6. Not news to me. I never had much faith in the Hydro’s ability to wheel and deal with the big boys.  I was not the only one to think thus.  I too must have been right.

Of such state negotiators: There’s one born every minute but unfortunately they seem to die at the rate of one a year.

  7. TO NUKE OR NOT TO NUKE
as the search for alternative energy continues many call it unsafe and not an option, however innovation always will involve risk, for instance perhaps a meltdown could be a blessing in disguise as to abandon such would be to risk something far worse than chernobyl , but that of the loss of future superpowered , costumed heroes.
If we fail to encourage our scientists to get trapped in a failing reactor, their frail human bodies will not absorb the massive doses of radiation necessary to transform them into metallic / chrome beings with electrons emblazoned acoss their muscular chests.
as our world takes on the challenges of the 21st century we need now more than ever, glowing superbeings capable of harnessing the atom in order to fight crime.
while we have the technology to irradiate household insects in experiments gone awry,we have not yet done so as no one as yet has been bitten by radioactive spider then gone on to develop such powers.
with scientific endevour so contained ,perhaps we need to see some radioactive containers spilt from the back of speeding trucks and showering small boys thus empowering them with hightened senses and radar like superpowers of rooftop jumping avengers.
And without research into Gamma Bombs how will our idealistic young scientists be forced to run out onto the test site at the last moment to save some reckless teen, only to be mutated into a giant ,green force against evil.
these are not easy questions to face, but face up to them we must !
we say we are committed to science, but just where are the halls of justice ? filled with governing councils of serum- created ,android teenagers accompanied by scantily clad “femalions”
    sworn to our protection.
we say we are committed to providing our youth with the best possible education, but where are the schools for the gifted children of the next wave of evolution, training new “HOMO SUPERIOR” mutants to protect humanity, or the holographic-room needed to sharpen their battle skills.
for all the lip service paid to the ongoing struggle against terrorism,we have no international espionage organisation based upon nuclear powered, flying, aircraft carriers, those of all political stripes must agree that what we desperately need is an eye patched, cigar chomping superagent to coodinate our responses to all that threatens our way of life.
