Tasmania
Premier Paul Lennon in July declared: Richard Flanagan and his writings are not welcome in the New Tasmania. (Hang him, Paul) Strangely though, they seem welcome elsewhere in the world. The New York Times recently asked Flanagan to write a travel piece on Tasmania, which excited much interest in the USA when it was published there on 12 September 2004. Le Monde are shortly to publish it. And today, in answer to requests, Tasmanian Times publishes it ... and waits to see if the Tasmanian Government will exile the traitor, coward and un-Tasmanian Flanagan to a re-education camp in a Styx clearfell for once more having the temerity to write about his home ... POKIES ... this is a scandal
To simply assume the relationship between the two parties was such that normal government guidelines and competition principles that apply to small business and even community organisations, and that are written and enforced by Treasury, didn’t apply in this case, was scandalous. The taken-for-granted assumption that Federal could never lose their pokies licence has literally cost us all hundreds of millions of dollars. JAMES BOYCE
