A cry from the heart ... my environmental depression

OPINION, By VICTORIA WOOLLCOTT

I believe I am suffering from a new modern illness, 'Environmental Depression' due to threats of development in sensitive natural areas plus the continuing logging of our forests and poisoning of wildlife.

I am plagued with uncomfortable symptoms similar to chronic depression, but rather than a cure with drugs and therapy all I need is an end to the Ralphs Bay proposed development and assurance that our coastline will remain undeveloped by insensitive, greedy, giant corporations and that our forests and animals will be safe..

Unfortunately the govt. so far does not recognise my illness which is in epidemic proportion in Tasmania and is spreading unchecked throughout communities. .

I hold our governement accountable as it has the ability to end this disease and create a happy environment in which I and many others would have a miraculous, instantaneous recovery..

I am not joking, see if you have these symptoms ... .

Insomnia

Loss of appetite or excessive appetite (can go either way)

Feelings of impotency

Uncontollable crying

Excessive worrying

Nervous stomach can cause diarrhoea

Uncontollable anger

Grief

Unable to focus on daily tasks etc

Thoughts of suicide

Fear

All these symptoms are debilitating and at the bottom of it all is a deep fear of losing our natural world and the fear of what we are leaving our children

I am heartbroken, it worries my friends and family but I am not alone. I find no joy living here watching nature be dominated and controlled for monetary benefit, and seeing so much life and beauty destroyed. I live a half-life, patches of happiness interspersed with sadness, anger and hopelessness..

I am a part of nature; my well-being is directly linked to my environment ... as it is destroyed piece by piece, so am I. .

It is a deliberate, consistent, unchecked attack on the health and wellbeing of Tasmanains by governent and industry and they continue to infect us with disease which kills the body, mind and spirit of the people and the natural world..
